Designed by world-renowned SHoP Architects and spanning more than 1.5 million square feet across two distinct buildings, Hudson's is a global destination that features Class A office space including the future world headquarters of General Motors, The Detroit EDITION hotel and residences, a retail collection, food + beverage, an event venue and activated public spaces.

A new plaza between the tower and the office building anchors the center of the development — creating a unique gathering space for tenants and visitors alike.

A towering Legacy

For generations, J.L. Hudson Department Store was the premier retailer in Detroit and one of the most important department stores in the country. As the store’s physical footprint grew over the decades, so too did its place in the collective hearts and minds of Detroiters.

Throughout its life, J.L. Hudson Department Store would undergo 12 expansions, ultimately reaching a height of 25 stories and covering an entire city block.

At one time the largest department store in the United States, J.L. Hudson Department Store broke ground in 1891. The massive flagship store anchored the bustling Woodward Avenue corridor and was a destination location for both domestic and international shopping enthusiasts.

Despite its impressive history and outsized presence in Detroit, J.L. Hudson Department Store closed its doors in 1983, and was eventually demolished, but Bedrock has ensured that the history of the site is echoed in the new Hudson’s Detroit.
